Life is random, you can't accurately predict your future. Architects get approached by clients asking them to design all sorts of projects, you just don't know who your future clients will be or what projects you will end up working on.

This project is based on the randomness of a Random Number Generator.

Design architecture using a random number generator to determine a project design brief.

Design a project based on whatever random numbers relate to the various specific numbered points for.

1- Location Play Geo Guessr to pick the project location

2- Purpose

3- Design era

4- Design features

5- Building height

The learning outcomes for this project are:

  • There is no 'client' for this project so you are the de-facto client to design what you want.

  • Experience the process of designing architecture to a brief, however random the brief is.

  • Exploring world geography by playing Geo Guessr & using Google Earth + Maps to investigate a site.

  • Do site analysis to determine important features to consider when designing the project.

  • Understanding the culture of the people in the area/country of the site which may influence your design.

  • How people relate to the purpose of architecture.

  • Learn about design eras & design features.

  • Improve your design & drawing skills based on the research you do.

  • Use whatever digital technology you want to visually communicate your project design ideas to others.

Example of using the Random Number Generator to determine the Purpose of your project.

There are 12 Purpose options.

1- Sport

2- Education

3- Music

4- Food

5- Relax

6- Religious

7- Cultural

8- Scientific

9- Technology

10- House

11- Hotel

12- Prefab-pod

EXAMPLE INSTRUCTIONS TO DETERMINE THE PROJECTS PURPOSE

  • Enter the range 1 to 12 on the Random Number Generator.

  • How many numbers is 1.

  • Click 'Get Random Number'.

  • Whatever number you get, you have to design for.

  • If the random number was 3 then you are going to design a project for the Purpose of Music.

  • Repeat this process for Design era, Design features, Building height

location.gif

Play Geo Guessr to randomly select a location for your project. Geo Guessr is a 'explore the world' game. You get 5 goes to get the highest score based on how accurate you can guess where in the world it randomly paces you. Select 1 of the 5 locations Geo Guessr puts you to determine a site for the project.

Once you have decided the location for the project, do a site analysis.

Use Google Maps or Google Earth to get an accurate site plan so you can draw the site to scale and proportion.

  • What are the important features of the site?

  • What are the surrounding sites like, will they influence your project?

  • Research the culture of the people in the town, city & country of the site.

  • How will their culture influence your project?

1- Sport

2- Education

3- Music.

4- Food

5- Relax

6- Religious

7- Cultural

8- Scientific

9- Technology

10- House

11- Hotel

12- Prefab-pod

Once you have determined the purpose of the building, do research about that purpose.

  • What are the main design functions of the architecture purpose?

  • How do people relate to the purpose, how do you design for this?

era.gif

What's the Design Era of your building, there are 15 options.

  • What were the key design traits of the important buildings of the era?

  • Who were the famous architects of the era?

  • What were their design ideas?

  • How will you incorporate design concepts of the era into your project?

12- Cantilevers

13- 3D printed

14- Outrageous

15- Concrete

16- Zen

Once you have determined the design feature, do research about the main design concepts.

  • How have architects incorporated these features into their designs?

  • What are your ideas for how the design feature will relate to the Purpose & Design Era of the project?

building-height.gif

How high will you building be? There are 10 options.

8- 23 metres (8 stories)

9- 1 story high above ground & 2 stories deep below ground

10- 328metres tall, the same height as the Auckland Skytower

Randomly determining a building height is subjective depending on your site location, some sites might not suit tall buildings. Be sympathetic to the local environment and a adjust the height of your building accordingly.
